Power converters for FAIR
As a part of in-kind contribution to the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), Germany, SMPCL has been actively involved in design, design reviews, feasibility studies, pre-prototype developments, testing and evaluation of power converters for FAIR. SMPCL has designed, developed and tested two pre-prototype power converters for FAIR. The first prototype is a four-quadrant converter (±93 A / ±27 V) and the second prototype is a two-quadrant converter (271 A / ±127 V). These power converters are developed based on IGBT bridge converter (full-bridge for the first prototype and dual half-bridge for the second prototype) operating at 20 kHz. Intermediate dc voltage is obtained with 50 Hz three-phase transformer and rectifier. Subsequently based on the design provided by SMPCL, a 300 A, 142 V, two-quadrant first-of-series prototype power converter has been successfully fabricated, tested and qualified in collaboration with ECIL, Hyderabad.
