RRCAT has been celebrating women's day every year since last four years. This year, Women's Day was celebrated on 18th March 2008 on the theme - “Togetherness”. The programme had two sessions - in the morning session, lecture by the chief guest and one presentation were scheduled. The post-lunch session was a cultural programme comprising of drama, skit and dance performances.

Mrs. Prabjot Singh, member Women Cell RRCAT, welcomed all participants and distinguished guests to the “Women’s Day” celebration. Dr. Alka Ingale, chairperson, Women Cell RRCAT gave a brief overview of the activities of women cell from the time of its constitution. She said that as a trust building measure and thereby being able to create better work atmosphere for women, it was found necessary to increase the interaction among women colleagues. She mentioned two major steps taken by women cell in this regard i.e. to start the women’s day celebration and to start a communication channel among women employees of RRCAT

The Chief Guest of the function was Dr. Swati Jain, an eminent educationist and a multi faceted personality. She has done B.E. in Chemical Engineering and doctorate in “Education Leadership and Innovations” from U.S.A. At present, she is involved with a project on social justice with UNESCO and is working on a new mission called ‘Inclusive Education’. Dr. Swati Jain talked about the best methodology to follow in order to become a successful woman, dispersed with pearls of wisdom derived from her experience. She emphasized the need for women to give time to themselves and discussed how it can be done effectively in daily routine by efficient time management.

In the morning session, there was a presentation by Mrs. Anagha Mokhariwale and Mrs. M. Seema on the theme of “Togetherness”. The strong virtue of togetherness i.e. team work was emphasized in the presentation and it was mentioned that the team members should be diversified in their skills and that they need to work towards the goal of the team and not for their individual goals.

The post-lunch session had a presentation by Dr. Alka Ingale and Dr. Aparna Chakrabarti about a survey conducted by them along with Dr. Rama Chari and Dr. Suparna Pal related to “Women in Science”. In the presentation, it was mentioned that though there is a higher level of acceptance today for working women, but still it is left to women as to how to balance home and work front in order to be successful. The conclusion was that there is a need to change the perception of the society towards working women. This was followed by group based performances by RRCAT women staff members. This included a fusion of Kathak and Bharatnmatyam classical dance, a humorous skit, “Guldasta” by AECS participants, two chorus songs, a drama titled “Nari Shakti’ depicting 6 mythological characters and Garba dance performance. The programme was successfully concluded with a tea session in the evening.
