RRCAT celebrated the 25th anniversary of its foundation day on 20th February, 2009. It is to be recalled that it was on 19th February 1984 that the centre was founded by late Shri Giani Zail Singh, then president of India. It may be noted that the year 2009 also happens to be the birth centenary year of late Dr. Homi Bhabha. The chief guest for the occasion was Prof. B.V. Sreekantan, former Director, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. Continuing the usual practice, the celebration was in the form of a gathering of all staff members in the central complex auditorium. Welcome speech by Dr. P.D. Gupta was followed by a report by the director, Dr. V.C. Sahni on, “Scientific accomplishments of RRCAT during last year”. Prof. Sreekantan deliberated on the topic, “Dr. Homi Bhabha and the Nuclear, Elementary Particle Era”. Being a former student of Dr. Bhabha, Prof. Sreekantan had intimate knowledge of Dr. Bhabha, as a scientist and as a person. Prof. Sreekantan described not only Dr. Bhabha and his work but also an era which saw the start of Indian science in general and the atomic energy programme in particular. The function ended with a vote of thanks by Shri C.K. Pithawa.
