Power Converters for Other Applications

Apart from development of magnet power converters for Indus-1 and Indus-2, various power electronic systems have also been developed for other applications.

  1. Power Converters for Chemical Laboratory, RRCAT
  2. Development of Zero-Flux DCCTs
  3. Power Electronic Systems for ISUD, RRCAT
  4. Power converters and other electronic systems for superconducting magnets for CERN

Power Converters for Chemical Laboratory

Bipolar pulsed power converters of various ratings have been developed for Chemical Treatment Facility, RRCAT. Bipolar pulsed power converters have distinct advantages of finer grain deposition, uniform thickness distribution and smoother surface finish of the job after electroplating. Various such bipolar power converters have been developed ranging from 2A to 1000A. Number of forward and backward cycles, pulse widths, and current amplitude in both directions are programmable.

Development of Zero-Flux DCCTs

DCCTs are used as the precision DC current sensors. Two prototypes of 300 A DCCTs have been developed based on zero-flux principle. Difference in the peak magnetising currents during positive and negative half cycles is sensed for the zero-flux operation. Zeranin strip is used to convert current into voltage signal.

Power converters and other electronic systems for superconducting magnets for CERN

RRCAT developed superconducting corrector magnets MCS/MCDO for CERN. These magnets were tested at cryogenic temperature of 4.2K. For this testing, a power converter was developed for energizing the magnet and an electronic system for quench detection and analysis was developed with help from Computer division, RRCAT. Apart from this, another system was developed to test superconducting joints.
