Tunnel temperature monitoring system (TTMS)
In order to measure and monitor the ambient temperature variations in the SRS ring tunnel and establish a method to compensate for temperature introduced errors in electron orbit path length through use of RF synthesizer based frequency tuning, a tunnel temperature monitoring system (TTMS) is developed and installed in the Indus-2 ring.

A micro-controller based temperature data logging system is developed and put in place for recording temperature of the ring at 50 different locations inside the tunnel. Digital temperature sensors (DS18B20) with accuracy of 0.5 deg C are used in a micro-controller based system. The measured temperature data are transmitted serially to the TTMS server. A LabVIEW based GUI receives the data and updates the database. The temperature sensors are installed throughout the ring (200m distance) using one wire bus in linear topology, Philips 89V51RD2 based custom developed TTMS controller having custom developed active one wire bus driver and optical fiber communication interface, custom developed TTMS application software with different modules installed over TTMS PC connected to TTMS controller inside the ring using 140m long OFC.

The controller handles the communication with upto 100 temperature sensor devices using one wire bus protocol. It collects the temperature data from all the sensors and sends it to SCADA server. It also performs the device handling functions such as device configuration, detection and error reporting etc. The embedded software for temperature controller is developed using in application programming (IAP) APIs to directly update the device ID table in microcontroller ROM thus facilitating easy replacement of faulty temperature sensor with the new one and system reconfiguration. The SCADA system for the project is developed in LabVIEW framework with a modular architecture. It comprises of four modules viz.TTMS server module, GUI module, Data-logger module and system configuration module.

Subsequntly, the system has also been extensively used for studies for enhancing the temperature stability of tunnel.
